Ship breaker novel5/13/2023 Sadna (Pima's mama) goes to help Richard (Nailer's pops), and Pima and Nailer find shelter from the monster storm. So Nailer runs to Pima and her mom's shack. He considers leaving his father behind as he flees to seek higher ground, but his conscience gets the better of him. In the morning, when Nailer wakes up, a major storm has started. When Nailer returns to his shack, his father, who is high, threatens him, so to avoid a confrontation, Nailer offers the remainder of the booze he and his friends shared on the beach. That night, Nailer and the remainder of his crew celebrate his luck and talk about the choices they have and the consequences of what Sloth has done. When he returns to his crew, Sloth has to face the consequences of her betrayal: She's thrown off the light crew. He doesn't get off scot free, though he has some metal fragment stuck in his shoulder. Sloth decides to leave him to his fate (not super nice), and Nailer eventually finds his way out and tumbles into the ocean. As he's working with a crewmember, Sloth, though, he falls into a vat of oil. Because he's small, he's able to access smaller places in the ship. Nailer is part of a crew that breaks up tankers that are no longer in use.

In the last century, the iconic Hong Kong-based wuxia fiction writer Jin Yong (1924-2018) came to be celebrated as the godfather of modern wuxia fiction, with global sales of his books surpassing 100 million copies and countless multi-media adaptations. All “Wuxia” fiction shares some or all of these themes: knight-errant righteousness, brotherhood loyalty, resistance to tyrannical regimes, chivalric benevolence, and altruistic ideals. Books that belong in this genre are mostly categorized under “Asian Myth & Legend Fantasy” and/or “Action & Adventure Fantasy”.Īs for the definition, I’d say the “Wuxia” genre is specific to Chinese culture and literature that dates back to at least the Tang dynasty (600-900AD) and has these three traditional hallmarks: (1) it has ancient historical settings (2) the main characters are martial artists with superb kung fu skills (3) the main plot is about violent conflicts. If you look at the Amazon book categories, you won’t find such a genre. Presently in the English-language mainstream book market, the “Wuxia” genre doesn’t exist. Today we are accompanied by Alice Poon, author of The Heavenly Sword, who also has published historical fiction.ġ.- How would you define the wuxia genre? And the xianxia? Welcome to my favourite section of the site, being able to talk with the authors.

George eliot's adam5/12/2023 It is clearly reflected when Arthur fully trusted Adam when he encountered him with Hetty. Eliot projection is direct and she also evokes the psychological self in an elaborative way. Many modernist writers who uses stream of consciousness technique relies much on the characters behaviour to insinuate the mental psyche and their responses through silence. However, Eliot’s psychological development is strictly forward and neither complex. The characters such as Lisbeth contemplated her own life which reflects the flow of inner time when she lays on a chair after purifying the chamber and bed once her deceased husband laid. There are continuous flow of human thoughts and perceptions which are largely focused and magnified. In the novel, Eliot focuses on the inner world of Hetty’s mental psyche and her brain and health rather than the outer reality where she spends time in thinking about her runaway lover. Eliot explores the individual mind and forecasts the mental state, responses and their behaviour. She has tried to project the impact of outer reality inside the psyche of the characters. Many critics have pointed out that George Eliot focuses much on the inner world of the characters rather than the outer reality. ’Adam Bede’, written by George Eliot deals with the psychological aspects of the characters.

Iain McGilchrist has spent the 11 years since the publication of The Master and his Emissary' assembling, arranging, tuning the left hemisphere tools he has to use - words - to try to evoke in our minds the cloud of right hemisphere ideas that he wants. With a gift for synthesising neuroscience, culture and philosophy, his thought has provided essential frames for making sense of the times we live in and proved particularly influential on Rebel Wisdom. Nobody who understands Iain McGilchrist to be a Master, as I do, could commit the folly, fall into the trap, of trying to be his Emissary. He is a Quondam Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and of the Royal Society of Arts, as well as a former Clinical Director of the Bethlem Royal & Maudsley Hospital, London. Iain McGilchrist is a psychiatrist, philosopher and literary scholar. When we do, we tap into an understanding that is both profound and beautiful, in line with the deepest traditions of human wisdom.ĭr. He suggests that in order to understand ourselves and the world we need science and intuition, reason and imagination, not just one or two. He argues that we have become enslaved to an account of things dominated by a partial view dominated by the brain’s left hemisphere, one that blinds us to an awe-inspiring reality that is all around us, had we but eyes to see it. In ‘The Matter with Things’, Iain McGilchrist tackles the big questions: Who are we? What is the world? How can we understand consciousness, matter, space and time? What happens if we neglect the sacred and divine?

Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs5/12/2023 They were farmers, and though they didn’t own fancy things and lived in flimsy houses made of reeds, they were healthy and joyful and wanted for little. The peculiars in the village of Swampmuck lived very modestly. Set in a distant era before peculiars lived in time loops, it concerns strange dealings between a peculiar village and a group of disarmingly polite cannibals. The tale you’re about to read is both history and parable. (They’re also meant for peculiar eyes only, so please, if you’re not someone who finds themselves floating out of bed in the middle of the night or sprouting flames from the palms of their hands, politely turn your attention elsewhere.) The tales are mostly folklore and meant primarily to be ripping good stories, but they also cover some important aspects of peculiar history, such as how Miss Peregrine’s time-looping predecessors came to be. They're the beloved fairy tales and legends that the peculiar children grew up hearing, written by and about people with peculiar talents and afflictions. “Prior to now, the Tales of the Peculiar was something that existed only in the world of my novels. Riggs sets up our excerpt from Tales of the Peculiar:
